We run into these situations far more often than big birthdays. And 350 Kč is exactly the amount where things get tricky.

Why a cheap gift is harder than an expensive one

With an expensive gift, you usually know what you're buying. With a cheap one, the selection is full of things that look great on the shelf and fall apart within a week.

The key is to choose something that does one thing well, rather than something that does everything halfway.

What works in this category

Something for a backpack or keys. From the age of six, kids care about what they carry around and what they show off at school. A keychain is seen every day and takes up no space at home.

Something for a collection. When a child collects something, one more piece makes them happier than a random item for the same price.

Something that glows in the dark. It works reliably across ages and genders. When in doubt, go for the glow-in-the-dark version.

A simple, quality item. Good crayons, a proper flashlight, a nice notebook. Things a child actually uses hold up better than a toy they look at once and put aside.

A mystery pack. The thrill of opening it is worth something in itself, and kids love it no matter what's inside.

What to avoid

Things with a big box and little inside. The child will notice right away, and you'll notice too from the look on their face.

Minis from expensive brands. For 300 Kč you get the smallest possible version, and next to a sibling's big one it looks like a consolation prize.

Battery-powered things at this price point. They're usually noisy, don't last long and the batteries can't be replaced.

For parties and group gifts

When you need to give gifts to several kids at once, look for something where every piece is equally valuable. Nothing ruins a party faster than one child getting a nicer color.

Either buy everyone the same thing, or go for something where the differences are part of the fun, like mystery packs. Half and half is the worst.
